Another Approach to Music Transcription Suzy S. Earlier this month, Brooklyn guitar teacher Mike B. shared his tips on how to transcribe music did you try them out? If youre still struggling, heres another approach from fellow Brooklyn teacher Martin N. to think about Since music is what you hear, developing your ear is one of the most important things for a musician to work on. While sight-reading is an essential skill, learning music by ear can be an extremely valuable exercise. When you play music with other people, the more you can hear and understand the better the music will be and the more comfortable you’ll feel. Learning songs by ear can be tough and sometimes pulling up a tab seems like the faster and better way to go. But stick with it, and you can train yourself correctly. So where do you start? Here’s one technique: I like to stick to the mantra, if you can sing it, you can play it. Not all of us, including myself, are great singers. Don’t worry about how your voice sounds, though just try singing! Start by listening to the song or part of song you want to learn. Get to the point where you can sing along with the recording (even if it’s a bass line or guitar part). After you can sing it, go to your instrument and see if you can find that first note. Use your singing as a guide as you continue through the part you are trying to learn. Keep going back to the recording for reference, and use a trial and error approach to see if you can match the notes that you are singing. You’ll notice that whatever piece of music you’re trying to learn is built on intervals. For example, C to E is a third, and E to G is a minor third. Next, see if you can think of a song that contains each interval. For example, the Star Wars theme song starts with a perfect 5th, and the Wedding March starts with a perfect 4th. The more you have the sound of the different intervals in your ear, the easier it will be to recognize them when you hear themes in the music you are learning. Then, try singing the different intervals! As you sing back the part you are trying to learn, you may stop and realize that you are singing a fifth, fourth, third or any other interval. Great! Find that interval on your instrument and you are one step closer to learning the song. Once you have the notes down, listen to how they are being played. Is it loud or soft? Legato or staccato? What register of your instrument are the notes being played in? You will learn a lot about the style of the performer during this process. At first, learning by ear can be frustrating, but take it slow and see how far you can get. Remember, your music teacher can always help you and give you advice for learning songs. The more you learn by ear, or transcribe music, the easier it will get. So next time, before you pull up that tab or sheet music, try learning a song by ear! Everything You Need to Know About the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA+) The Collegiate Learning Assessment, or CLA+, is a standardized exam with significant similarities to the ACT and the SAT. However, instead of enabling high school students to matriculate to the university of their dreams, the CLA+ will assist college students in landing a top job. The CLA+ is an evolution of the CLA, which was first established in 2002. This test delves beyond GPA, internships, and extracurricular involvement in order to better measure individuals real-world value to employers. It provides students with a report card for critical thinking skills and problem solving abilities. The exam can be taken by students during any year of college, from entering freshmen to graduating seniors. Freshmen could use the test to obtain a benchmark of their skillsets, giving themselves a better idea of strengths and weaknesses. Seniors could use the test to better market themselves to employers. The Council for Aid to Education, a non-profit organization, created the test and offers it to most anyone in higher education, from students graduating from a four-year institution to students who took a series of online courses and have not yet completed their degrees. The test is voluntary and there are already more than 250 colleges and universities that participate in the CLA+. What is on the test? The first edition of the CLA+ will be available in the spring of 2014. It is a 90-minute exam with a 1600-point scale (similar to the old SAT). The CLA+ wont assess subject-area knowledge, but instead test critical thinking, problem-solving, scientific and quantitative reasoning, writing, and the ability to critique and develop arguments. Here are 4 ways to improve your problem solving skillsthat you may find useful. The test will rely mainly on students completing a Performance Task and answering Selected-Response questions. Performance tasks provide students with a real-world problem and a set of documents to consider. Students will then write a response to the scenario. Prompts may include, What is the best way to address this problem? or What is the cause of this problem? For these questions, students must make logical decisions that are supported by the evidence. Selected-response questions challenge students with a series of multiple-choice questions based on provided documentation (blog posts, debate transcripts, newspaper articles, political speeches, etc.). The questions will assess reasoning skills, critical reading and evaluation skills, and analysis skills [parallel word construction] Why was the CLA+ created? The CLA+ is part of a broader movement by companies questioning the value represented by a traditional four-year Bachelors degree. Simply completing four years of course work at a university is no longer a guarantee for landing an entry-level job. Many employers have expressed disappointment in how ineffective some colleges have been in preparing students for the global economy. Oftentimes, employers expect individuals to demonstrate real-world work experience through internships or extra-curricular involvement. OUCH!Anyone who has seen a martial arts film knows what a roundhouse kick and a straight kick looks like but a diagonal kick, a half-shin/half-knee kick might be harder to imagine, as would be an axe heel kick.Kicking (Te, in Thai) is done more with the shin than with the foot because foo t bones are more delicate than the shin bone; besides, shins can be toughened up â€" you will likely be tasked to kick the heavy bag with your shin as a part of your training.Kicking is different than a foot thrust (Thip, in Thai). These foot jabs are considered defensive manoeuvres used to block attacks and to maintain distance; there are five such moves:reverse foot thrust (Thip klap lang)sideways foot thrust (Thip khang)straight foot thrust (Thip trong)jumping foot thrust (Kradot thip)slapping foot thrust (Thip top)They are essentially used to push your opponent back, executed with the sole of the foot â€" either the ball or the heel rather than the toe or the side.We visited a Muay Thai gym in London where they were learning the slapping foot thrust; it is an exercise in balance and strength!Finally, the knees.Like the elbows they are particularly devastating blows; for instance, the curving knee strike mimics the roundhouse move of the kick, adding momentum to the blow, but the point of contact is the knee. The side of the ribcage is the usual target for this type of knee strike (Ti khao, in Thai).Obviously, you would have to be in peak physical condition to deliver and be on the receiving end of such strikes; that is why Muay Thai training is so rigorous and why these fighters are in the best possible physical shape.Still, studying Muay Thai doesn’t mean that you have to be a fighter, Muay Thai gyms in Glasgow offer classes for people to get in shape; no fighting involved â€" although there may be sparring…By now you must be wondering where all of these Muay Thai gyms are located; we get to that now. This facility’s main selling points are that is it easy to get to (also in the Piccadilly area) and it is well-equipped.We like that they are serious about combat sports and that they offer a trial session at no cost. So, while you enjoy membership at the Cobra of Siam, nothing says you can’t get some sparring in at SBG.We met a Muay Thai fighter in Belfast who liked going to other clubs to see how she measured up against opponents she’d never fought before…If you happen to be in Stockport, consider yourself in luck: you have ready access to All Power Gym. It is an extremely well-equipped facility that maintains high training standards.While their focus is MMA, they nevertheless run several Muay Thai classes throughout the week for beginners, intermediate and advanced fighters. SAT vs. ACT - which test should you take One of the most common questions I get from my students is whether they should take the SAT or the ACT.   Frankly, the answer to that question depends on each student’s strengths, weaknesses, and personal preferences.Back in the day, the tests were mostly regional: students on the coasts took the SAT, and those in the middle of the country took the ACT.   Now, though, students all over the country often take both tests.   Colleges accept both the SAT and ACT, so it makes sense for students to try both tests and see which one yields a higher score.There are several major differences between the SAT and the ACT:1) The SAT is more focused on complex problem-solving and critical thinking, and the ACT is more straightforward.   Generaly speaking, students who enjoy solving puzzles and reasoning through complex situations will prefer the style of the SAT.   The ACT is better for students who appreciate straightforward questions, both in math and reading comprehension.2) The ACT has a sci ence section, and the SAT does not.   Now, before you write off the ACT, thinking youve forgotten everything from science class, take heart ACT science is more like reading comprehension with charts and graphs.   Its not an easy section, but you dont need outside science knowledge to get a good score.3) The ACT is faster-paced than the SAT.   Most students feel time pressure on the ACT, especially on the reading comprehension and science sections.   Both sections have 40 questions to complete in 35 minutes.   Timing practice is essential to doing well on the ACT.4) Theres no guessing penalty on the ACT.   The dreaded guessing penalty on the SATmost of my students strongly dislike being penalized for wrong answers.   This doesnt happen on the ACT you just dont get credit for the question.   If the guessing penalty really stresses you out, you might prefer the ACT.5) There are no vocabulary questions on the ACT.   The ACT doesnt have sentence completion vocabulary questions like the SAT does.   If vocab is a big problem for you, you might like the ACT better.   On the other hand, if you have a great vocabulary, this could boost your score on the SAT.6) ACT math covers more trigonometry than SAT math does.   ACT math questions (especially the harder ones) will use basic trig concepts like SOHCAHTOA.   Make sure you understand this concept before taking the ACT.For all the differences between the SAT and ACT, most students end up scoring similarly on both tests.
